Study Shows Tai Chi Improves Balance For People with Parkinson’s

A recent study suggests that tai chi may improve balance for Parkinson’s sufferers. Study randomly assigned 195 Parkinson’s patients to participate in resistance training, tai chi or stretching. Patients in the tai chi group performed better in the stability tests throughout the study. People with mild-to-moderate Parkinson’s used Tai Chi for this test.

Patients were still feeling the benefits of tai chi three months after the treatment ended. Plus, no serious adverse effects were experienced. If you or a loved one are dealing with Parkinson’s, consider adding tai chi to your holistic therapy program. You and your physician can read this report in the New England Journal of Medicine – Feb 9th. Study was funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Study Shows Tai Chi Improves Health, Relieves Pain

Participants in a study on the health benefits of practicing Tai Chi observed a big increase in breathing capacity and a reduction or elimination of backaches and neck aches. Participants with high blood pressure claimed a drop of 10 to 15 mm Hg systolic at rest. All had more energy for their day to day work.

This ten year study on aging through Harvard, Yale and Emory University determined that Tai Chi was superior to more technological balance therapies and that Tai Chi reduced the risk of injury from falling by 48%. Complications from injuries by falling are the sixth leading cause of death in seniors in American and account for about $10 billion loss per year to our economy.

Can Chinese Exercise Improve Your Health?

When you think of exercise you might think of lifting weights or running. However Chinese exercise is different. It builds up your vital life energy naturally.

Your Best Defense Against Stress – Qigong

After a tense day at the office you may not feel particularly motivated to exercise. But researchers are discovering that exercise is one of the most powerful stress and anxiety busters. “Any exercise that gets your heart rate up helps lower levels of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol,” quoted from Dr. Mark Liponis, corporate medical director of Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Mass. Long term stress results in your body releasing greater amounts of these hormones which can lead to insomnia, headaches, depression, digestive issues, and other health problems. Exercise promotes the release of natural pain killing endorphins and boosts your mood.

Qigong Q&A

Qigong (pronounced “chee gung”), means “life energy practice”.  It is an ancient Chinese healing art that combines the use of mind, body, and breathing to strengthen and balance vital energy in the body called “qi”.  The practice of Qigong consists of meditative techniques and special movement exercises that can benefit people of all ages and physical conditions.  Qigong can even be done seated or lying down for those with weaker constitutions or lower body concerns.  Qigong is practiced to maintain health, promote longevity, quiet the mind, decrease stress, and prevent or treat illness.  It is a natural and simple tool to balance body energy so that life can be experienced to its full potential.  Those who are new to qigong or have never heard of qigong before may have some simple questions which I will try to answer here.
