By Steven Sonmore L. Ac., on August 11th, 2009 Did you know Chinese medicine actually has five seasons instead of our typical four?
Summer is divided into 2 parts…summer and late summer. Late summer or “Indian summer” is that special time at the end of summer and before autumn when there often is a hot spell. The Spleen and Stomach rule the summer season. What this means is these two organs are now more active and more vulnerable to problems at this time of year. The Stomach and Spleen are related to the “Earth element.” Our earth provides support and nourishment for all life. Your Spleen and Stomach provide nourishment for your body. Your food is ingested, digested, transformed, transported and assimilated into your physical body creating muscle, bone, blood and energy. You are what you eat. By Steven Sonmore L. Ac., on July 4th, 2009 Have you ever wondered if over the counter pain medications like Tylenol, aspirin-free Anacin, Excedrin and various cold medicines could damage your organs? Well, listen to this study that was published in the Journal of American Medical Association (7/5/06, Vol. 296, No.1). 145 adults were given either a placebo or four grams of acetaminophen. The study was inpatient and diet controlled (meals were provided).
ALT is an abbreviation for alanine aminotransferase (there’ll be a quiz next week), which is what is released in the blood when liver cells are damaged. The ALT levels increased to almost 5 times normal in 19% of the subjects that were given the acetaminophen. No increases were detected in the placebo group. By Steven Sonmore L. Ac., on June 20th, 2009 Did you know that not all acupuncturists are not the same? Yes, it’s true. Selecting the right acupuncturist to treat your health problems is an important decision that can either make your acupuncture a success or turn it into a disaster. The sad fact is that there are people who go out and take a few weekend courses on acupuncture, buy some needles and themselves “acupuncturists.” This is like someone buying a stethoscope and calling himself a doctor! In the state of Minnesota it is sadly legal for chiropractors to take only 100 hours of training in acupuncture. (They are not allowed to used the term “acupuncturist”) Would you get brain surgery from someone who had just a weekend of training? By Steven Sonmore L. By Steven Sonmore L. Ac., on June 7th, 2009 You’ve probably had headaches of some sort. Maybe you popped a Tylenol or Aspirin and forget about it. But some headaches need professional evaluation. Headaches obviously are complex, with a wide range of causes from sinus problems, to eyestrain, stress, lack of sleep or even drinking too much caffeine. Ac., on November 11th, 2008 Did you know that 80% of people in hospitals are there because their stress has manifested as a chronic health problem that now has to be treated more drastically? Your body’s stress mechanisms were designed to support you during stressful times, like in an emergency. But not during the constant stress to which we are often exposed. Stress can be externally produced by an unfulfilling job, a difficult supervisor, a stressful home life, caring for an aging parent, or by uncertainty about the circumstances around you, either about work, or world issues. And stress can be internally produced…for example, constant worrying, driving yourself too hard, being a perfectionist, or carrying grudges. | Schedule an AppointmentTo Inquire or Schedule an Appointment Call 612-866-4000 Minneapolis Acupuncture Blog | |
