Aspartame Name Change, Don’t Be Fooled

The producer of Aspartame, Ajinomoto is initiating a new marketing push that will rebrand the sweetener as “AminoSweet”. Aspartame is commonly found in diet soft drinks (Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi), artificial sweeteners (NutraSweet, Equal, Splenda, Spoonful), candies and flavored medicines.

Aspartame is used in many foods and beverages touted as sugar-free or low calorie. But you might want to stay away from this artificial sweetener because of studies that have investigated reports of ill effects.

Some of the side effects of aspartame can include:

• Headache
• Joint pain
• Change in vision
• Convulsions and seizures
• Hallucination
• Nausea and vomiting

Aspartme can cause many other problems as well.

  • A long time ago, I tried drinking beverages that were sweetened with Aspartame. The side effects that I experienced were headaches, anxiety, and heart fluctuations. Naturally, I stopped drinking, or eating, anything with Aspartame or artificial sweeteners. After that, the effects went away. Since then, I have used things like honey, agave nectar, etc.

  • Good choice Scott. Indeed, this artifical sweentener can cause a lot of problems.

I have been using artificial sweeteners (starting with saccharine) since I was weaned because of my father’s profession. More than sixty years later, I am wondering if I would feel the effects if I stop this practice. It would be a simple thing to do. It would be interesting to see if there would be an improvement to my joint pain.

It’s interesting to see the side effects from the aspartame, especially since I have always been warned of the fact that there are side effects, I just never used enough of it to think it would matter. I was also recently informed of using stevia as a natural sweetner (i.e. herb) instead of any of the other “diet” sugars. A helpful suggestion!
