The good news is that now less than 2 out of 10 adults smoke. The number of American adults who smoke has dropped below 20 percent for the first time in our nation’s history. The bad news is health officials said that cigarettes kill almost a half-million people a year. The 1990s showed adult males in the U.S. lost an average of 13.2 years of their lives and females lost 14.5 years due to smoking. Compared to people who continue smoking, smokers who quit before age 50 cut their risk of dying in half over the next 15 years, according to the American Cancer Society.
Do you toss and turn at night only to wake up unrefreshed? You’re not alone. An estimated 30 percent of men and 40 percent of women fail to get a good night’s sleep. Consider there are over eight million doctors’ visits per year are for insomnia.
October 24 is the day we celebrate Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day every year. This day increases public awareness of the progress and benefits of acupuncture and Oriental medicine.

Beyond Treating Pain
You might be more familiar with the pain mamgement benefits of acupuncture. But you might not know that acupuncture is also very effective in treating colds and flu, insomnia, depression, anxiety, PMS, stress, IBS, quit smoking and more.
Did you know that you can pay for acupuncture and other alternative medical treatments with the money you save in a health savings account? Many people who have these medical savings accounts are unaware that they can use the money for treatments that may not be paid for by their regular insurance policy. This means that you can get acupuncture for HSA dollars that are exempt from taxes.
Here’s how it works: These medical savings accounts allow you to deduct an amount of money from each pay check which is then not subject to income tax. You’re allowed to use the money by the end of the year only on medical expenses, and you save on taxes at the same time.

A common misbelief is that PMS is normal. Not true! Just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s normal and you definitely should not be expected to just accept it as part of being a woman. Fact is PMS is not all that common in other parts of the world. It is by far, much more common in the US. Why is that? No one knows for sure.
At our Minneapolis acupuncture clinic about 70% of our clients are women suffering from health concerns such as PMS, migraines, menstrual cramps, hot flashes, anxiety, insomnia and PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
